Using your friends as a resource is a great way to learn Hindi from English. The best place to start is with Hindi conversational phrases. For example take the Hindi conversational phrase ‘Taking a Bus Ride’. The Hindi phrases used have a sprinkling of English words. Bus, for instance, is an English word that is widely used in everyday conversation. The proper Hindi word, I suppose, would be ‘Gadi’ or ‘Bus Gadi’. It is used, but most people seem to prefer ‘Bus’. This type of slang use is quite popular in the Hindi language and is not something that is typically covered in a school textbook.

This is just a simple example of some of the ways that English can play a role in your ability to learn Hindi. American friends that speak Hindi are a great resource to learn Hindi from English. They are already bi-lingual in nature making it easier on you to learn and grasp the language. Don’t expect your friends that speak Hindi to use all the proper terminology or grammar. Slang is popular in all languages and cultural phrases are used. The textbook version of the language should not be taken as literally as maybe your professor would want. However, it will save you quite a few laughs and snickers if you try to learn the language from English with your Hindi speaking friends help.
